Training & Education
Training and education for maritime doctors
There is so far no speciality for doctors in maritime medicine. However, there is no doubt that certification of maritime workers, and providing medical advice to the maritime industry and to seafarers requires a kind of knowledge and knowhow that is not a part of standard medical curricula. Physicians who want to serve within maritime medicine must supplement their knowledge and skills by attending appropriate courses. Recently, possibilities have also been opened for pursuing an academic career within maritime medicine.
Training and education for seafarers
Navigators may be decreed to be in charge of medical events on board- and of the medical chest. Hence they need at least a basic knowledge of first aid and of basic medicine, treatment and care. The International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW), 1978, sets the standards of competence for seafarers internationally. http://www.stcw.org/big.html
